Band Biography: The Yaturlu Yaturlu Band is a family band of brothers that started in 1996 in Lajamanu.
Yaturlu Yaturlu is the Warlpiri word for ‘Granites’. The father of the band members chose the name Yaturlu Yaturlu Band after his country.
Yaturlu Yaturlu Band members describe their music as country-rock, rock’n’roll and reggae. They sing about stories from their ancestors, and about every day life. They say they want to make music that sends out positive messages to people listening.
In 2006, band members studied Contemporary Arts and Music at CDU in Darwin. Then they got selected to play at the GARMA Festival that year.
They have also won Battle of the Band prizes in Papunya, Yuendumu and Lajamanu.
Yaturlu Yaturlu Band has recorded their music at CDU with Jim Moginie, and also at CAAMA Music with Martin Rotsey. (Jim and Martin are both from Midnight Oil).
