about us

Bush Bands Bash is the premier Indigenous music event in Central Australia, providing a massive stage for remote bands to showcase their talent to a national audience. Bush Bands Bash is open to any Indigenous musician living in a remote or very remote area in Australia, offering a unique opportunity to share stories and culture through music.

Each year, 10 bands are selected to participate in the program, with a minimum of two acts specifically chosen through the Divas stream. Bush Bands Bash is more than just a gig; it is a professional pathway for Indigenous musicians from remote and very remote Australia to build lasting careers through elite mentorship and high-end technical preparation.

Bush Bands Program

General Stream

The program is centred around Bush Bands Business (BBBiz), an intensive 4 day skills-development camp held in the days leading up to the concert. The general stream focuses on the collective growth of the band, covering everything from stagecraft and technical sound requirements to the business side of the music industry.

Professional Mentorship: Bands don’t just perform; they learn from the best. During the workshop phase, musicians are mentored by a team of professional musicians and industry experts. These mentors work closely with each band to refine their sound, tighten their arrangements, and build the confidence needed for a major festival performance.

Three-Stage Rehearsal Process: Preparation is world-class. Musicians have the opportunity to rehearse across three different stage setups. This allows bands to get comfortable with different acoustic environments, professional monitoring systems, and stage layouts, ensuring they are fully prepared for the technical scale of the main event.

Industry Skills Workshops: BBBiz provides practical training on the technical and legal aspects of the industry, including dedicated workshops on artist management, music law (contracts and copyright), APRA AMCOS registrations for royalties, and essential skills in PR and media interviewing.

Strict Professional Commitment: Success at the Bush Bands Program requires a 100% commitment. All band members must agree to remain at BBBiz for the entire duration (9–13 September). Participation is the priority, this means no leaving for football, or outside commitments.

Divas Stream

Divas stream is a dedicated pathway designed specifically to support and elevate female-identifying Indigenous performers. While the general stream focuses on established bands, the Divas program provides a culturally responsive and professional environment for solo artists, all-female-identifying bands, or female led mixed-gender groups to further develop their craft.

By providing these specialised resources, the Divas stream ensures that female-identifying Indigenous musicians have the tools, confidence, and professional backing to deliver a world-class performance on the main stage at Bush Bands Bash. Along with participating in the general BBBiz program, acts in the Divas stream receive the following:

Tailored Mentorship: Participants receive intensive, one-on-one guidance from a team of three female-identifying music mentors and session musicians who specialise in navigating the music industry.

Live Band Support: Performers have the unique opportunity to direct professional MusicNT session musicians. This allows solo artists or smaller groups to arrange and perform their original material with the power of a full live band behind them.

Extended Development: To maximise this collaborative opportunity, Divas participants arrive in Alice Springs one day earlier than the general stream. This extra time is dedicated to rehearsals and connecting with their mentor support group.

Performance Flexibility: Soloists can choose to utilise their own backing tracks or lead the session musicians in creating a brand-new live arrangement specifically for Bush Bands Bash.

Bush Bands Bash

Selected bands perform a high-energy set at Bush Bands Bash to a crowd of over 3,000 people. Held at the historic Telegraph Station in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, the performance is supported by professional-grade sound, lighting, and staging. This is a family-friendly, drug and alcohol-free community event that celebrates the power and diversity of contemporary Indigenous music from across the country.

Bush Bands is more than just a gig; it is a professional pathway for Indigenous musicians from remote and very remote Australia to build lasting careers through mentorship and high-end technical preparation. By providing specialised resources, the Divas stream also ensures that female-identifying Indigenous musicians have the tools, confidence, and professional backing to deliver a world-class performance on the main stage.
